Learning How to Brush our Teeth - Pre-K

Posted by Lakewood Childcare Center on February 19, 2020 at 6:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Hello Pre-k families! We hope everyone had an amazing weekend and those who were off for the holiday that you enjoyed your extra day! Since Valentine's Day was last week, we are sure that a lot of sweet treats were eaten over the weekend. So, coming into this week, we are learning all about Dental Health! Yesterday to kick off Dental Health week, we learned all about how to properly brush our teeth, instead of going up and down which can hurt our gums, we have to brush in a circular motion. We also learned that we need to change our toothbrushes every 3 months. At the math table, the children worked with dental clip cards and at the science table,we have a dentist puppet that the children can play with and pretend to be a dentist and check out their friends' teeth! The children painted a tooth on brown paper all white to get rid of that cavity and the fun part of it all, they were painting it with a toothbrush. At language, the children sorted the lower-case letter teeth and the upper-case letter teeth in the appropriate bin. The sensory bin is a fun one this week, so go and check it out. We have some fake teeth in there with some toothbrushes so the children can practice cleaning teeth and get into the habit of properly brushing their teeth. Today was fun filled as well! We learned about the letter Ss, we added marshmallows (teeth) in the mouths at the math table. The number on the mouth represents how many teeth to add. The children also worked on fine motor skills by putting beads on floss. We also did the amazing Plaque Attack Experiment. In two cups, you add some warm water and yeast but in one of the cups, you add some sugar and watch how the plaque grows. This was to show the children that if they don't brush after eating sugary foods, then plaque can build up and grow. We hope the children are starting to learn that brushing is good and that we need to take the time to brush and have healthy teeth. Happy Brushing!

This week the children will explore activities focusing on dental health. Yesterday in art the children painted with toothbrushes. In math the children looked into a mirror and counted how many teeth were in their mouths. In language the children looked for the lowercase letters of the word “tooth,” that were mixed in with other letters on a large tooth. Today in art the children made a toothbrush gluing together pieces of construction paper. In math the children matched toothbrushes with numbers and in language the children dictated a response to the question, “How do we take care of our teeth? In science the last 2 days the children have been exploring toothpaste in a baggie, and in the water table this week the children are brushing baby doll teeth.

This weeks theme is "Dental Health". We introduced the theme with a picture of a Dentist with some of his tools-toothbrush, mirror, mask and gloves. For art the children painted with toothbrushes to explore other ways we can use them, and today the children glued foam and paper teeth to a mouth as we counted the teeth during the activity. At the math table we had number paper teeth toothpicks with white clay to build fine motor strengthen by making them stick and stand up straight, and colored number paper toothbrushes and colored counters to practice matching colors. At the manipulative table, we had red play dough and white/red straw pieces to resemble teeth for pushing and making prints to work fingers and hands, and today we had real colored toothbrushes and holders to practice eye-hand coordination and problem-solving as they put the brushes in each of the holes. We have packing peanuts, marshmallows, toothbrushes, tongs and containers for further exploration and imagination. We read the following books so far; "A Visit To The Dentist" and Mooses's Loose Tooth". We will continue to explore other tools used by dentist and many other dental activities the rest of our week.

Valentine's Day - Infant

The infant room is celebrating Valentine's Day a week later than the other classrooms so the activities have been all about hearts. love and how to be kind to others (in their own little way). We stuck contact paper to the window and had them attempt to stick paper hearts to it - some needed a little help but they all had fun with the activity. Then we attached it to the floor for them to explore it some more by crawling over it. Plastic rings were put inside a shoebox and we showed them how to shake it up and after opening it, they all were able to take the rings out and drop them back in which many enjoyed doing over and over. There was some fun interactions between the babies and the teachers while we played peek-a-boo with different colored scarves. They will continue to try and build block towers and see how high they can make them and fit heart cutouts into slots in the top of coffee can lids. They will have a chance to watch us tell stories about Valentine's Day by using felt hearts that can be taken on and off the flannel board and listen to books all about love. It has been a great week to give extra hugs and kisses while we celebrate Valentine's Day and all it brings with it with many more activities to enjoy as the week progresses.

We are finishing up our week the right way...with a party! We are so excited for the magician and to pass out our Valentines tomorrow. In the meantime, we have been busy making Valentines for others. Today, we used our eye-hand coordination and small motor skills to weave yarn in and out of a heart. The children were told the Valentine could be for anyone. It was a nice surprise to find out that many children wanted to give their Valentines to peers, grandparents and even teachers! Awwww we are feeling the love! At the language table, we played BINGO with candy hearts as our markers. At the math table, we are putting "chocolates" in the candy box. At the science table, we are using some problem solving and putting together marshmallows and toothpicks and making heart shapes. We continue to hear Valentine stories and talk about being kind friends. Tomorrow, we will be doing some easel painting and eating some snacks in the afternoon. What a fun week we are having!

Learning About Teeth - Infant

Wrapping up Dental Health Week the infants have continued to talk about our teeth and dental hygiene! A crowd favorite in the room has been continuing to look in the mirror together! Not only do the younger infants enjoy seeing their own reflections and those of us teachers supporting them, but the older infants have looked practicing big smiles and saying “Cheese!” We were even able to point out some of the older infant’s own teeth to them in the mirror while saying cheese! It was fun to see them point to and play with their teeth with their tongues! We used an empty ice cube tray and practiced “Brushing Teeth” with. It was fun to see all the infants using their fine motor skills to hold onto the toothbrush and ice cube tray as they explored. We had a blast trying to retrieve different light up balls inside of empty wipe containers to practice our problem-solving skills! Tomorrow we will explore puzzles, naming different types of pretend fruits and veggies and scribbling on black paper with different colored chalk! We look forward to exploring a new theme next week together! Until next time!

This week so far, Kindergarten has learned more about subtraction. We have been using candy hearts in our math too! We also have been graphing and creating math problems (addition and subtraction) based off the candy hearts we collect. We have learned some short vowel sounds and will keep learning their short sounds later going on to learn their long sounds. We have learned more sight words. Our new words this week include a, it and of. This week our Valentines party is on Friday. We will make Valentine bags in class. If your child wants to create a box at home, he/she are welcome to do so! We have school agers on Valentines Day so as part of the craft they will be making bags.
